Word of the Day: “Kind”

This morning, some PHC students started off their day with a session in the gym where they were shown how to use the cardio machines and the weights.

Other students took a walk to Burghley House, which lies just next door to our Stamford School Sixth Form site. Although the grass looked very dry following the lack of rain over the last few weeks in England, the park surrounding the house still offers impressive views and a relaxed atmosphere to help our students ease into their mornings before class begins.

In classes, MH and OBH students discussed CAE values and set goals for their learning. Positivity, kindness and respect were the three key takeaways.

From the PHC class, teacher Tom shares that the students “explored satirical humour in Gulliver’s Travels and retold a trivial dispute with modern slang for comical effect.”

After lunch, our MH and OBH students were given two weekly activity choices. Weekly activities allow our students to develop a skill over multiple sessions across the week. This week, the activities options are Textiles or Cooking.

Those who chose Textiles began by decorating tote bags and bandanas with their own designs. We hope these creations prove to be useful and treasured items that remind our students of CAE for years to come.

Meanwhile, in Cooking our students started with a British classic – apple crumble and berry crumble! To add to the excitement, we were able to pick our own mulberries from the garden outside of the Girls’ Boarding House to use in these delicious desserts.

The completed crumbles were kindly distributed to each boarding house for a treat before bedtime… yum!

PHC students began their Academic Elective classes in the afternoon. They chose between Academic English and Creating Media Content for publication.

Later in the afternoon, we dived into the swimming pool for the first time – a refreshing activity to provide some respite from the heat of the past few days.

Those not swimming took on a more leisurely activity. Inspired by the fabulous artwork around the school, our students put their art skills to the test by drawing the front of our Stamford School Sixth Form building.

Everyone knows the feeling of sitting at home, watching a game show on the television and thinking they know all the answers. Well tonight we put that to the test. In their Harry Potter Houses, our students competed to win our very own CAE versions of ‘Family Fortune’, ‘Who Dares Wins’ and ‘The Chase’.

Who Dares Wins in particular was a showcase of some incredible knowledge, with one House team naming 27 Harry Potter characters in 30 seconds!

The Chase pitted the students against the staff. Would the staff be able to use their extra experience to catch each House?

Whilst three teams were able to successfully outrun the Chasers, one team was caught before reaching the jackpot.

With winners and losers around the room, this was a great opportunity for students to show kindness to their peers.
